Bible Verse: “For the Lord has given the command, and he will smash the great house into pieces and the small house into bits.” Amos 6:8
Song: Lauren Daigle – First
In Amos 5 and 6 we continue the drama of the Israelites, Amos goes on to tell us the reason for God’s judgement and urges them to seek God and live (5:4) and to seek good, not evil. But as you may have guessed by now, they don’t listen. They continue to rule the courts of law with injustice and bribes in order to get their way. (5:15) They continue to indulge in luxury at the expense of others. They make no effort to change their ways.
Chapter 6 addresses their pride and wastefulness – “You lie on beds adorned with ivory” (vs 4) and “You drink wine by the bowl full and use the finest lotion.” (vs 6). Amos is trying to show them how crazy it is to waste money on these temporal things instead of helping others.
In our key verse for today it tells how God will destroy their houses, their palaces, small or large, He will smash these showpieces into bits and pieces! These are homes that are not about comfort, home and family, these are show pieces to show off their power and wealth, they are status symbols.
Don’t get me wrong here, neither Amos or God is saying that it is not ok for us to have comfortable homes. It is even ok to feather our nest with all those super cute, shiplap looking signs with amazingly fun sayings! Friends, let me be the first to admit, I am a Chip and Joanna Gaines, Magnolia Farm junkie!!! I have recorded every episode of Fixer Upper and watched them each several times, I even follow Joanna’s Blog – At Home.
So, why did I choose this verse to focus on? Because I think it is important to keep our hearts in check when it comes to worshiping other gods and having idols etc.. In Deuteronomy 5:8-9 it says “You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind, or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for other gods.”
I wonder if y’all will allow me to romanticize this just for just a minute? Our God will fight for us! Being jealous for something that is rightfully yours is appropriate jealousy. Worship, praise, honor and adoration belong to God alone and He is truly worthy of it! Therefore, God is rightly jealous when we are giving our first priority to anything or anyone other than Him.
In John 10:10 it says that God came to give us life abundantly! The key to having God’s “Abundant Life” is keeping Him in His rightful place in our priorities (Joyce Meyer).
So, yes, I love to feather my nest, shiplap my walls, decorate every inch of my life! But, I need to be reminded sometime to make sure that I am not putting these things as a priority over God, in my day, in my heart, or in my wallet.
Note to self: First seek Him by intentionally pursuing God in my daily life. Pray and ask for His guidance, not just when things get messy, but in everything. Be in the Word and listen for His voice as I read the instruction manual (bible), for this will show me how to live a life that is rich with abundance!
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times that I have not made you a priority in my life, I know that you are a jealous God who is worthy of my worship, praise, honor and adoration! I love you God and don’t ever want anything to separate us! Amen
