“How delightful is your love, my sister, my bride! How much more pleasing is your love than wine, and your fragrance of your perfume that any spice!” Song of Songs 4:1

Do you remember those valentine’s cards you would get in a box to exchange with all your classmates? They would look something like this:
One of my favorite parts of grade school valentine’s parties was making the valentines box. I remember taking a shoe box and covering it in red construction paper, then I would cut paper hearts out of the purple and pink paper to decorate it with. The grit of the construction paper, the smell of Elmer’s glue and the taste of licking the envelopes shut, are still fresh in my memory!
But I remember something else too, disappointment. I would carefully take my valentine’s box home after school, run up to my bedroom and dump all the cards onto my worn yellow comforter. I rushed to get each one open and read what people had written on my cards. You see, my love language is words of affirmation, so I noticed. I noticed, who did not give me a card, I noticed who left off the friends forever part and I noticed who just signed their name. I noticed.
I just started a new bible study on the Song of Songs. This book is a beautiful love story about a king and a Peasant woman. It is a wedding song, a poem. To be honest, I used to blush a little bit when I would read it, it was so personal and so intimate. I felt like I was peeking into somebody’s private journal.
But God did not tuck this intimate little love story of a King and a beautiful Shulammite women in the middle of the bible just for our reading enjoyment. He put it there because it is our love story also, it is the love story of God’s love for us, His people!
You see, God’s valentine to us is right here in this book of the bible! His valentine cards to us might just look like this:
Ok, the one about having hair like a flock of goats does not sound like a good thing, but it was a proper compliment at the time it was written, I promise!
When I open up the word of God and His words of love pour out on me, I am never disappointed. He does not leave anything out of His love for me, and I notice. I notice.
Heavenly Father, Your love amazes me, I am in awe of you, I am humbled by Your love for me. Happy Valentines Day, my true love. Amen
