Bible Verse: As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:14-1

When I first decided to start a blog and write devotions it felt like God had told me to have this ministry, I would need to be willing to live a devotional life.
As I have been exploring the devotional life and spending more time in prayer and the word, I continually come upon the word “Holiness”. I feel compelled to dive into what holiness is and how I am to live a holy life.
So, what makes up a holy life? It is a life set apart from the world. It requires us to be part of the world but not be like the world. It is living a life that is intentionally lived with a purpose different than our own fleshly desires. God isn’t calling us to be perfect, but to be distinct from the world.
“Those who live according to the flesh have their mind set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their mind set on what the Spirit desires.” Romans 8:5
God wants us to live an extra-ordinary life not an ordinary life. We are set apart from the world by Him and for Him. God did not deliver the Israelites out of bondage in Egypt to be led into the same bondage somewhere else and he didn’t rescue us out of bondage to live an ordinary life either.
“I am the Lord your God, consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves along the ground. I am the Lord who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God, therefore be holy, because I am holy.” Leviticus 11:44-45
Holiness takes root in our lives when we are in God’s Word and with His people, increasingly surrendering our mind and bodies to the life God has called us to. Holiness is the one-word description of what it means to live as Christians. As with many things, it is not a destination, we are never going to “arrive” at holiness, it is a lifelong journey.
“To put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” Ephesians 4:22-24
As I meander my way thru life, working on bringing holiness into every aspect of my day and the life God has purposed me to live, I find that I utilize many things to help me. Things such as prayer, spending time daily talking to God. Attending church, spending time with other believers. Worship, meditating and singing to and about the Holy One. Studying the Word of God on a regular basis and writing this blog.
How can we help one another on this journey of holiness? What extra-ordinary life does God have for you? Is being set apart, being holy, hard for you? What struggles are you having in this area?
Heavenly Father, we choose to continue to put off our old self and old manner of life, to live a life that is set apart, a life that is holy. Show areas we need to work on and help us in our weakness to stand in your strength. We desire to be more like you in every way. Amen
