I Pray the Lord my Soul to Keep

Bible Verse:  What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?  Matthew 16:26

Song:  Matt Redman – Greatest Hallelujah (Lyric Video)

Today we are going to explore the word soul.  I am glad you are here to keep me company as we unpack what it means to have a soul.

As a highly spiritual person I fell in love with the word “Soul” as soon as I heard it.  I have never doubted or even wondered if I had a soul.  I have always known my soul.

But as I have been leaning into a deeper study and understanding of what God wants for me and how He wants me to live my life, I wanted to see what the Word of God say’s about our souls.

So far, we have looked at Haggai and dug into how our bodies are the place that the Holy Spirit resides and why it is important to rebuild our temples if they are in ruins.

We also dug into Haggai and explored what it means to be chosen and what our part in that is.

I will be strong, remain fearless in recognizing that His spirit remains within me, comprehending that my future is greater than my past, being careful in my thoughts, grasping the fact that God will bless my first efforts and finally, appreciate that I have been chosen.

And last week we dug into what it means to lead a devotional life, to live in holiness and how God has called us to live extra-ordinary lives.

So, today we are going to see how we are to use our souls!  I recently found the following quote on Pinterest and want to share it with you:

She woke up one day and decided to quit cleaning her house and start decorating her soul instead.  – Author Unknown

So, here is the list of  Bible Verses about your Soul that I looked up and this is what I found out.

With our souls we are to do the following:

  • Seek The Lord
  • Love the Lord
  • Fear the Lord
  • Obey the Lord
  • Serve the Lord
  • Holdfast to the Lord

This is a list of descriptions that I found to describe what our souls do:

  • Grieve
  • Rejoice
  • Pant for God
  • Thirst for God
  • Awaken
  • Finds rest
  • Praise
  • Can become weary
  • Yearns for the Lord

And finally, this is what, according to scripture, speaks to our souls:

  • Knowledge is pleasant to our soul
  • Longing fulfilled is pleasant to our soul
  • Gracious words are sweet to our soul
  • Good news is good to our soul
  • Hope is an anchor to our soul

I started this study with many questions I wanted to answer about the soul.  Questions such as:

Where is the soul?  Is it in our heart, in our gut, part of our brain?

Is the soul where the Holy Spirit resides in us?

Is the soul the same as our intuition?

Is the soul part of our sub-conscious?

These questions will just have to go unanswered, after reading scripture, articles and watching documentaries on the soul, there are many opinions about these questions and no definitive answers.

But, what is true about the soul, is what the Word of God tells us.  I do believe, based on what I have read in scriptures, is that the soul is immortal and when our bodies cease to exist, our souls will continue.

John 10:28 – “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish, no one will snatch them out of my hand.”

I believe that Satan cannot harm our souls or take them from us.

Psalm 56:3-4 – “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.  In God, whose word I praise – in God I trust and am not afraid.  What can mere mortals do to me?”

So many of the verses that I found on our souls included the words, “with all your heart and soul”.  God intends for us to use our hearts and souls for Him and His purposes.

I think that I like the fact that neither science, religion or our culture, has been able to strip away all the mystery of our soul.

I will leave us with two quotes about our souls that really resonated with me.

The soul was made for God and without God it is restless and in secret torment.  –Billy Graham

You don’t have a soul.  You are a soul. You have a body.   –CS Lewis

Heavenly Father, we seek you with all our heart and soul, we fear you with all our heart and soul, we choose to obey you with all our heart and soul and we serve you with all our heart and soul.  Help us to hold fast to you with all our heart and soul and to bring glory to you thru our heart and soul.  We pray all this in the name of Him who created and will be the keeper of our souls!  Amen

  2. Hi Lulu,
Great post! I have stood at the bedside of many terminally ill & those who have passed – my own son, daughter & my late husband included, when their spirit leaves, their soul has gone from their bodies, their face doesn’t even look like that person any longer! And there is an essence missing in them, that was there beforehand, even if they were sleeping…I believe the soul is our spirit & essentially who we are…this was evident when I had my NDE…But your right scripture leaves the mystery blurred…

I like the C.S. Lewis quote!

You’re most welcome to drop by for a cup of inspiration anytime.
